Proof: A Play, by David Auburn

Proof is the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. One of the most acclaimed plays of the 1999-2000 season, Proof is a work that explores the unknowability of love as much as it does the mysteries of science. It focuses on Catherine, a young woman who has spent years caring for her father, Robert, a brilliant mathematician in his youth who was later unable to function without her help. His death has brought into her midst both her sister, Claire, who wants to take Catherine back to New York with her, and Hal, a former student of Catherine's father who hopes to find some hint of Robert's genius among his incoherent scribblings. The passion that Hal feels for math both moves and angers Catherine, who, in her exhaustion, is torn between missing her father and resenting the great sacrifices she made for him. For Catherine has inherited at least a part of her father's brilliance -- and perhaps some of his instability as well. As she and Hal become attracted to each other, they push at the edges of each other's knowledge, considering not only the unpredictability of genius but also the human instinct toward love and trust.

My first review was rejected because I focused too much on how great the company performed. So, let me tell you how great this script is. I saw the movie. It was ok. I was told to read the script because it is much, MUCH better. So, I am. The condition of the play is brand new. The print is clear and very legible. None of the pages seem to be out of order or printed upside down. I'm looking forward to sitting down and enjoying this.

I'm not big on award-winning fiction, but this just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. You have the daughter of a brilliant mathematician who may be a brilliant mathematician herself maybe more brilliant than Dad. Of course there are issues, family issues, personal issues. I attended a performance and the ending still gnaws at me.

In the past few years there has been a resurgence of plays with themes centered around math and science and characters who are mathematicians and scientists. Thank heaven! Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" is magnificent. Then there are two plays produced by the Manhattan Theater Club: "An Experiment with an Air Pump" by Shelagh Stephenson and this play, "Proof" by David Auburn. I think both are wonderful. After winning the Pulitzer, a shot at a Tony, and a continuing run on Broadway, Auburn really has no need for my good words; however, let me give a few anyway. This is a cleverly written piece. Unlike "Copenhagen," this play really isn't about mathematicians and scientists. It is just framed around them. No math skills are necessary to enjoy this play. Instead, it is an examination of love, trust, madness and genius presented through the lives of mathematicians. In fact, the only weakness in this play is when real mathematics comes up. I cringed when I heard the famous exchange between mathematicians G.H. Hardy and Srinivasa Ramanujan put in the mouth of Robert and Catherine, the father/daughter mathematicians at the heart of this play. It just rubbed me the wrong way.Fortunately, this is the only time math actually comes up. Instead, this play takes us into the lives of four very interesting people. I was fortunate enough to see a performance of this play on its second night on Broadway. I was incredibly moved. Mary-Louise Parker's performance as Catherine was particularly impressive. Reading the script, I was carried right back to the theater and could relive the experience again. I loved it.

I saw the film before I read the play. I recommend reading the play first. Worth your time and thoughtful reflections.

Bought this script for a high school drama student to read, mark up and review. It did the job. Nice size, decent type face, tight binding. No frills paperback, but it did note alternate versions of this play. Everything needed to read/study this modern play in it's stage form. THIS IS NOT THE FILM version. Basic professional script from the experts at producing scripts--Dramatists Pay Service, INC.

I saw a fabulous production of this show at Theatreworks in California this kyear (2015). As soon as it was over I decided I wanted to see it again so I purchased the script and as I read it I could see the wonderful actors who performed it again and again. This is a beautiful play.

Excellent play by Auburn. Short, concise and well written. I wish I had seen the original play production with Mary Louise Parker as she seems to my mind the perfect fit for the part.So many questions spill out from the pages. Made into a movie that patterns the play nicely and with an all-star cast.

I'm a journalism major and was required to take some form of art class, so I chose Theater 101. This isn't a bad play, in fact when I first heard the synopsis, I thought my God what a terribly boring concept for a play. The dialog and character development is what changed my attitude. I know among college students this is a requirement (pending on your professor) but for all you future playwrights out there, give it a try.
